What is Spread Betting

There are various ways one can bet on a sporting event and one of the most popular is spread betting. On a baseline level, a spread refers to the multitude of outcomes that may be possible when two entities oppose each other in a sporting event. Instead of placing a bet on who wins or loses the event, one bets on the whether the outcome is above or below the spread. This adds a unique phase to gambling which not only makes the venture more exciting, but is also adds other means in which one can win money. And, after all, is winning not what gambling is all about?

Spread betting centers on under dogs and favorites. (Note; Spreads are provided for both team as well as solo sports.) Underdogs, for lack of a better description, are teams that are considered more like to lose an event. The underdog is given additional points since they are at a disadvantage for winning. For example, the team might be given +3 which is three additional points added to their final score. Conversely, this means the favorite team will have three points deducted from their final score. As such, in order to win a spread bet the better must beat the spread. If they pick a favorite the team must win by more than three. If they pick and underdog they can win if the under wins outright or loses within a margin of 3 points. Spreads are fairly simple to comprehend, but do not automatically assume because your team is getting extra points they will automatically win. Remember, in wagering nothing is guaranteed.
